At Neighborhood House, we believe young people deserve the best out-of-school time programs possible — that each weekday afternoon is an opportunity for growth, discovery, and meaningful connection. But that can only happen with a dedicated team of afterschool professionals who bring passion, skill, and creativity to their work.
That’s why we're proud to join the National AfterSchool Association in celebrating Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, April 21-25. It’s a time to recognize, appreciate, and advocate for the extraordinary individuals who are committed to making a difference in the lives of our youth.
"Research shows that caring, skilled, and knowledgeable staff are the backbone of program quality and are key to positive youth outcomes,” notes Beverly Beckles, our Youth Development Director. "We hope everyone joins us in celebrating afterschool professionals and continues to support the important work they do throughout the year."
When we look at the impact of afterschool programs, the numbers tell a compelling story. Nationwide, 7.8 million children and their families rely on these programs, with more than 850,000 afterschool professionals creating safe, empowering environments that help young people reach their potential. These are mentors, educators, and champions for kids!
Whether they're helping with homework, organizing STEM projects, teaching music, or coaching sports, afterschool professionals play a vital role in strengthening the growth and development of young people. So how can we honor and celebrate the extraordinary contribution they make? Here are a few ideas:
Write a thank-you note. Let them know how much you value their work.
Send an email to their supervisor. Highlight the difference they’re making.
Offer a heartfelt word of appreciation for all they do. That kind of encouragement goes a long way!
Give them a shoutout on social media. Use the hashtag #HeartOfAfterschool to share a story or photo.
But don’t stop there. Supporting job quality, advocating for funding, and continuing to show gratitude are ways we can show our appreciation year-round. Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week is a starting point, a catalyst for building a culture that truly values these educators, mentors, coaches, and role models.
This is a group worth celebrating. They’re the heart of afterschool. Without them, the programs our children and families rely on simply wouldn't exist. So let’s honor these everyday heroes who transform out-of-school time into experiences kids look forward to every day.
