Hunger Doesn't Take a Break: Why Our Food Pantries Need Year-Round Support

Food insecurity touches our community year-round, affecting working families, seniors, and individuals who are doing their best to get by. Our pantries provide stability when people face unexpected expenses, job transitions, or health challenges that strain their household budgets. Regular donations throughout the year ensure we can continue being a reliable resource for anyone who lacks access to food, regardless of the season.
Last year alone, our pantries in Wilmington and Middletown distributed over 5,000 bags of food to neighbors in need. Behind each number is a real person finding relief during a difficult time — a parent able to focus on their job search instead of worrying about dinner, or a senior who can afford their medication because groceries are covered. This impact is only possible when our shelves stay stocked through consistent community support.
What We Need Most
The reality is, food insecurity is on the rise in Delaware. The challenges our neighbors face aren't always visible to the outside world, but that doesn't mean they aren't taking a toll. We see the relief in someone's eyes when they realize they won't have to choose between groceries and their electric bill this month. That's the difference your donations make — one household at a time.
Keeping our pantries stocked with these staples ensures we're always ready to help:
Protein Sources
Tuna and assorted canned meats
Canned beans
Frozen meats (beef, chicken, pork, fish)
Meal Foundations
Boxed meals (mac and cheese, tuna helper, beef helper)
Pasta and sauces
Rice
Canned soups
Nutrition Essentials
Cereal
Frozen or canned fruits and vegetables
Personal Care Items
Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Soap, shampoo, and conditioner
Remember, any non-perishable food item helps. This list serves as a guide, but don't hesitate to donate other shelf-stable items you have available.
